Pentionery: Bridging the Gap Between Separation and Connection

As far as I can remember I have always been a prison reform activist. I have volunteered with several organizations and came to meet people directly impacted by the criminal justice system.

When I met my now-husband, who is incarcerated, I was always searching for greeting cards that fit our unique situation, but I could never find any that really spoke to us. The market offered little solace for families like ours, facing the emotional and societal challenges of incarceration. So, I started making my own cards.

At first, it was just for him, to bring a little joy during such a tough time. Each card was a labor of love, designed to convey heartfelt sentiments that traditional cards often overlooked. But then fellow prison wives asked me if I would sell them and I realized there are so many other families going through the same thing, needing the same kind of connection. That’s when Pentionery came to life in 2015, with a much larger mission: to bridge the emotional gap faced by countless families impacted by incarceration. 

Mass incarceration is a societal beast in the USA that isolates and stigmatizes. Through Pentionery, I wish to contribute to tear down those walls and fight those prejudices by offering a growing collection of stationery that brings smiles and sweet sentiments to those enduring the pain of separation. Something as simple as a heartfelt card
can make a huge difference for those inside. Each card I make is meant to bring a sense of closeness, even when things seem really bleak.

Inspired by the love and resilience found in our own story, I embarked on this journey not only for my husband and me but for all families navigating similar struggles. What keeps me going is knowing that these cards make a real difference. It’s all worth it when someone
tells me how a card brightened their day and made them feel closer to their loved one.

I’m constantly inspired by the love and strength people show, even in the toughest times. Pentionery is my way of turning those hard moments into ones of connection and hope. It’s not just a business to me — it’s about showing that love can conquer even the biggest challenges.
